About Us
So why is a seminary publishing a Japanese Dictionary front end?
- In 2006, when Kit Born returned to work at the seminary, he found that there were some other colleagues and students interested in Japanese language, culture, and mission work in Japan. Some of these students worked in the Educational Technology area with Kit and they would all informally discuss manga and anime while learning more about Japanese language and culture.
In 2007, the group decided to gather once a week to study the Bible in Japanese as a tool for learning more Japanese language and understanding how to communicate the Gospel message clearer to a Japanese audience. As any student of Japanese knows, new Kanji are time consuming to look up; it usually takes large amounts of concerted study to remember a given Kanji. Before studies, Kit would prepare the text, looking up words and handing out study sheets. During studies, Kit usually would grab his trusty Nelson's Kanji dictionary to do a quick lookup if a word was left out of the study sheet, but even this took precious time. The group also used the Nintendo DS Japanese dictionary as well as a tiny Sony electronic dictionary, but everyone was still hoping for a better way.
When the seminary was granted a developer licence for the iPhone OS, we realized how helpful it would be to have a hand-written interface for Japanese text lookup, and thus the idea for WWWJDic for iPhone was born. - It is the sincere hope of the J-Club here at the seminary that God's word will comfort and strengthen many around the world, and especially in Japan. We hope this tool will help your study of Japanese, and if you use it to study the bible, we pray that you will grow in faith and knowledge along side us. S.D.G.
